About the Agency
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) only accepts requests for access to protected data
from federal agencies authorized by law to receive this information. EIA does not yet have a platform
to share protected data with researchers for statistical purposes. However, EIA is working to
establish an onsite data-sharing program for researchers at EIA’s headquarters in Washington, DC.
Later in 2025, EIA will update this agency profile to let researchers know they can start applying
in the Standard Application Process portal for access to EIA’s available protected data.
EIA is the statistical and analytical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy. In
fulfilling its mission, EIA collects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and
impartial energy information to promote sound policymaking, efficient markets, and
public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the
environment. The Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 established EIA as the
primary federal government authority on energy statistics and analysis, building upon
systems and organizations first established in 1974 following the oil market
disruption of 1973.
Depending on the survey, EIA
publishes data in identifiable form on its website, or it protects data because its
release could cause competitive harm to energy firms or disclose sensitive financial
or personal information. For about 9 in 10 of EIA
surveys, EIA protects at least some data under the Confidential Information Protection
and Statistical Efficiency Act of 2018 or an exemption to the Freedom of Information
Act. For about 1 in 10 of EIA surveys, all reported information is considered public,
and EIA may release it in identifiable form.
EIA publishes data as statistical aggregates and as public-use microdata files for its
residential and commercial-building consumption surveys. You can learn more about our
products and programs on EIA’s website.
