Evaluation of Secondary Math Teachers from HSAC

Description

The Evaluation of Secondary Math Teachers from Two Highly Selective Routes to Alternative Certification (https://ies.ed.gov/ncee/projects/evaluation/tq_alternative.asp) is a cross-sectional survey that aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers in two alternative certification programs (Teach for America and Teaching Fellows). Middle school and high school students were randomly assigned to a class taught by a math teacher from one of the two programs being studied or to a similar math class in the same school taught by a teacher who did not participate in either of the programs studied. The study was conducted using computer-adaptive assessments of students, electronic and paper collections of student records data, electronic and paper collections of a teacher survey, paper collection of a teacher assessment, electronic and paper collections of teacher contact and consent forms, paper collection of parental consent forms, and telephone (non-CATI) interviews of HSAC program directors. Teachers were sampled from a small number of recruited school districts. Key findings were that Teach for America teachers were more effective than the non-HSAC teachers with whom they were compared and that Teaching Fellows were neither more nor less effective than the non-HSAC teachers with whom they were compared.
