This dataset contains data and documentation files for the 1996 state assessment in mathematics at grade 4 (total sample) for use in the analysis of NAEP data by secondary researchers. The “total sample” includes all schools and students, all of their responses, and data derived from these variables. The grade 8 data are available on a separate dataset (see NCES 2003498). Included on the dataset is a User’s Guide provided in electronic portable document format (PDF). This guide contains information on the contents and use of the data files on this disk as well as the assessment design and its implications for analysis. NAEP datasets from 2002 onward require a Tool Kit with the updated NAEPEX. Your organization must apply for and be granted a restricted-use data license in order to obtain these data.

Electronic devices (e.g., cell phones and laptops) are not permitted in the RDC. Some NCHS projects are authorized to access NCHS data at Federal Statistical RDCs (FSRDC). NCSES Secure Data Access Facility (SDAF) houses NCSES restricted-use data and provides secure remote access to researchers. USDA offers offsite remote access via a secure internet connection using the researcher’s own computer and web browser to approved datasets for data analysis within the Data Enclave.
