The National Survey of Children's Health, funded and directed by HRSA MCHB, provides national and state level estimates of key measures of child health and well-being. These data are essential to understanding the health status and health services needs of children across the nation and in your state and community.

IPUMS consists of microdata samples from United States and international census records, as well as data from U.S. and international surveys. IPUMS data includes name, age, gender, place of birth, income, race or ethnicity, marital status, education, and employment.

The Enterprise Summary Report provides key measures of comprehensive company-wide data, including company support organization and selected financial activities. Enterprise data products provide statistics on foreign ownership or control, foreign affiliation, research and development expenses, operating revenues, royalties and license fees for the use of intellectual property, and manufacturing activity.

Enterprise Statistics data were collected as part of the Report of Organization Survey (COS). The program has been suspended.

Enterprise Summary Report - ES9100 (large company)

The exporter and importer databases provide a periodic database of all U.S. exporters/importers and their characteristics. The structure of the Importer Database  parallells the EDB. As a result, the IDB has the potential to create profile exhibits for importers such as Imports by Company Employment Size from World Areas and Selected Countries, among others. The Importer Database (IDB) contains key data items from export/import statistics, the Business Register establishment list (BR), and selected 5-year census files. Import data include commodities exported; and shipment value, weight, country of origin, U.S. customs port, and method of transportation. BR data include exporter/importer identification, location and employment; and parent company (if any) identification, organization, location, employment, number of establishments and ownership. Census data are from the censuses of manufactures and wholesale trade, are establishment-based and include identification, total shipments, total export/import shipments (or sales), and employment.

Importer Database

The Survey of Manufacturing Technology (SMT) provides the first comprehensive data on the use and diffusion of advanced technology in the manufacturing sector; provides a method for obtaining comparable information on technologies in other sectors (such as nondurable goods industries). 

Basic data are collected on the presence and plans for using advanced technologies, establishment characteristics, technologies and other topics. The survey covers 17 specific technologies, including numerically-controlled machines, computer-aided design or engineering technologies, programmable controllers and local area networks. Characteristics data include type of manufacturing, age of plant, primary customer, and price of products sold. Other basic questions include the reasons for not adopting technologies, and interaction with Federal defense agencies.

Survey of Manufacturing Technology

The Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey provides statistics on the consumption of electricity and other types of fuel. It also provides data on the capability of manufacturers to substitute alternative fuels for those actually consumed, end uses, the extent to which energy-related technologies are being used by manufacturers and other related topics. The Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey is the only survey providing detailed statistics on pattern of energy use in the manufacturing sector.

 Use of this data requires approval from the Energy Information Agency and the Internal Revenue Service. The Census Bureau will coordinate all additional necessary reviews.

Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey

The Quarterly Financial Report (QFR) program collects and publishes quarterly aggregate statistics on the financial results and position of U.S. corporations.  Based upon a sample survey, the QFR presents estimated statements of income and retained earnings, balance sheets, and related financial and operating ratios.  

The QFR covers:
1) Corporations that have a plurality of business activity in manufacturing industries, and domestic assets of $250,000 and over.
2) Corporations that have a plurality of business activity in mining, wholesale trade, retail trade, or selected service industries, and domestic assets of $50 million and over.
3) Corporations that are above industry specific receipt cut-off values.

The statistical data are classified by industry and by asset size.

Use of this data requires Internal Revenue Service (IRS) approval.  The Census Bureau will coordinate all additional necessary reviews.

Quarterly Financial Report

The PACE presents statistics on capital expenditures and operating costs for pollution prevention and pollution treatment by type of media, air water or solid waste and type of activity, treatment, recycling, disposal and prevention.

Survey of Pollution Abatement Costs and Expenditures

The Census of Services (CSR) provides periodic and comprehensive data about service establishments and their activities. The United States Code, Title 13, requires this census and provides for mandatory responses.  The universe consists of domestic establishments that provide services to consumers, businesses, governments, and other organizations. These include all taxable establishments and tax-exempt establishments with payroll classified in SIC Division I except: academic and professional schools (SIC 821-2); labor, political, and religious organizations (SIC 863 and 865-6); and households (SIC 88). In 1992, over 8.7 million employer and nonemployer establishments reported receipts or revenues of some $1.6 trillion.

Basic data obtained for all establishments include kind of business, Federal income tax status, geographic location, taxable operating receipts (revenue for tax-exempt establishments), annual and first quarter payroll, and employment for the pay period including March 12. Establishments receiving a census form provide additional data on operational and organizational status, sources of receipts, business characteristics, and industry specific measures such as exports and the number of hotel accommodations. Other measures for tax-exempt organizations include gifts and endowment income.

Census of Services

The Censuses of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities (CUT) provide data on employment, payroll, detailed industry, and the amount of revenue by detailed source.  The files also include responses to special inquiries included on the forms for certain detailed industries. 

The industry groups (Radio and Television
Broadcasting, Cable Networks and Program Distribution, and Telecommunications) are based on differences in the methods of communication and in the nature of services provided. The Radio and
Television Broadcasting industry group includes establishments that operate broadcasting studios and facilities for over the air or satellite delivery of radio and television programs of entertainment, news, talk, and the like. These establishments are often engaged in the production and purchase of programs and generating revenues from the sale of air time to advertisers and from donations, subsidies, and/or
the sale of programs. The Cable Networks and Program Distribution industry group includes two types of establishments. Those in the Cable Networks industry operate studios and facilities for the broadcasting of programs that are typically narrowcast in nature (limited format, such as news, sports, education, and youth-oriented programming). The services of these establishments are typically sold on a subscription or fee basis. Delivery of the programs to customers is handled by other establishments, in the Cable and Other Program Distribution industry, that operate cable systems, direct-to-home satellite systems, or other similar systems. The Telecommunications industry group is primarily engaged in operating, maintaining, and/or providing access to facilities for the transmission of voice, data, text, sound, and full motion picture video between network termination points. A transmission facility may be based on a single technology or a combination oftechnologies. The Utilities component comprises establishments engaged in theprovision of the following utility services: electric power, naturalgas, steam supply, water supply, and sewage removal. Within this
sector, the specific activities associated with the utility servicesprovided vary by utility: electric power includes generation,transmission, and distribution; natural gas includes distribution;steam supply includes provision and/or distribution; water supply includes treatment and distribution; and sewage removal includescollection, treatment, and disposal of waste through sewer systems and
sewage treatment facilities.

Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities

The Census of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate (CFI) comprises establishments primarily engaged in financial transactions (transactions involving the creation, liquidation, or change in ownership of financial assets) and/or in facilitating financial transactions.  Three principal types of activities are identified: raising funds by taking deposits and/or issuing securities and, in the process, incurring liabilities.  Establishments engaged in this activity use raised funds to acquire financial assets by making loans and/or purchasing securities. Putting themselves at risk, they channel funds from lenders to borrowers and transform or repackage the funds with respect to maturity, scale and risk. This activity is known as financial intermediation. Pooling of risk by underwriting insurance and annuities.  Establishments engaged in this activity collect fees, insurance premiums, or annuity considerations; build up reserves; invest those reserves; and make contractual payments. Fees are based on the expected incidence of the insured risk and the expected return on investment; Providing specialized services facilitating or supporting financial intermediation, insurance, and employee benefit programs. In addition, monetary authorities charged with monetary control are
included in this sector.  This sector also includes establishments primarily engaged in managing real estate for others, selling, renting and/or buying real estate for others, and appraising real estate.

Census of Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate

The Census of Wholesale Trade (CWH) provides periodic and comprehensive data about wholesale trade establishments and their activities.  The Wholesale trade sector comprises establishments engaged in wholesaling merchandise, generally without transformation, and rendering services incidental to the sale of merchandise.
Basic data obtained for all establishments include kind of business, geographic location, dollar volume of sales, annual and first quarter payroll, and employment for the pay period including March 12. Establishments receiving a census form provide additional data on sales by merchandise line and industry-specific measures, such as number of prescriptions sold by drug stores.

Census of Wholesale Trade

The Longitudinal Business Database (LBD) is a research dataset constructed at the Census Bureau using a variety of survey and administrative data sources.  Currently, the LBD contains the universe of all U.S. business establishments with paid employees beginning in 1976. The LBD contains basic information on establishment size, industry, location and ownership that permit researchers to analyze establishment demographics. The LBD is updated annually.  

The LBD offers researchers a number of features not available in other longitudinal datasets.  These include:

Long Time Series  - The LBD contains complete establishment histories from 1975.  Precise birth and death year information are available for most establishments.

Industrial Scope - The LBD contains all employer establishments that are in scope for the Economic Census (i.e., all manufacturing, mining, construction, retail, wholesale, service, TCU and FIRE establishments) as well as a large number of public administration and other out of scope entities.

Improved Longitudinal linkages - In constructing the LBD, great care was taken to provide researchers with the most complete and accurate set of longitudinal establishment linkages possible.  This substantially reduces the number spurious establishment births and deaths observed in the data.  In addition, the LBD provides researchers with detailed flags that describe, for each establishment, the nature of the linkages over each year an establishment is observed in the data.

Linkages to other micro data - The research capabilities of the LBD can be greatly and easily enhanced by linking it to other establishment and firm information via the Employer Identification Number (EIN).

Longitudinal Business Database

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Service Annual Survey (SAS) to provide national estimates of annual revenues and expenses of establishments classified in select service sectors. Survey questionnaires are mailed to a probability sample that is regularly updated and periodically re-selected from a universe of firms located in the United States and having paid employees. The sample includes firms of all sizes and covers both taxable firms and firms exempt from Federal income taxes. Firms without paid employees (nonemployers) are included in the estimates through administrative data provided by other Federal agencies and through imputation.
The Service Annual Survey provides the only source of annual receipts estimates for the service industries.

Use of this data requires Internal Revenue Service (IRS) approval.  The Census Bureau will coordinate all additional necessary reviews.

Services Annual Survey

The Monthly Retail Trade Survey provides current estimates of sales at retail and food services stores and inventories held by retail stores. The United States Code, Title 13, authorizes this survey and provides for voluntary responses. Retail firms provide data on dollar value of retail sales and end-of-month inventories. These data are widely used throughout government, academic, and business communities. The Bureau of Economic Analysis uses the estimates to calculate Gross Domestic Product. The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses the estimates to develop consumer price indexes and productivity measurements. The Council of Economic Advisers uses the estimates to analyze current economic activity. The Federal Reserve Board uses the estimates to assess recent trends in consumer purchases. The media use the estimates to report news of recent consumer activity. Financial and investment companies use the estimates to measure recent economic trends. The MRTS contributes to two designated principal economic indicators. This survey is an integral component of the Advance Monthly Retail Trade Survey and the Manufacturing and Trade Inventories and Sales Report.

Monthly Retail Trade Survey

This dataset includes foreclosure records for all properties that were in some stage of the foreclosure process during that calendar year.  An additional feature of this dataset is that CARRA has appended MAF ID's to all address-level records for which a MAF ID could be assigned. The MAF ID can then serve as a matching key for whatever housing unit matching that one might want to accomplish with records from current surveys or the decennial census for which the MAF ID is provided.

This data was made available under the stipulation that they can be used only for internal Census Bureau research.  Any analysis solely focusing on the foreclosure records cannot be published.  The main purpose of these foreclosure records is their use in conjunction with various Census Bureau survey or decennial census records.  Analysis focusing on the use of merged foreclosure/survey records can be published since the merged data are Title 13 Census Bureau data.

Commercial RealtyTrac Foreclosure

The Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS) is conducted each year to produce national estimates of total annual sales, e-commerce sales, end-of-year inventories, purchases, total operating expenses, gross margins, and commissions for wholesale trade activities in the US (by type of operation and industry).  Additionally, in survey years ending in "2" and "7," AWTS generates detailed operating expenses estimates.  Title 13 of the United States Code authorizes the Census Bureau to conduct this survey and provides for mandatory responses.  Merchant wholesalers provide data on sales, e-commerce, end-of-year inventories, inventory valuation methods, inventories held outside the US, purchases, and total operating expenses.  Sales tax and detailed expense items are also requested in survey years ending in "2" and "7."  However, manufacturers’ sales branches and offices (MSBOs), which fall under the merchant wholesale category, do not receive questions about purchases or detailed operating expenses.  Agents, brokers, and electronic markets (AGBRs) provide data on sales, sales on own account, sales made on the account of others, commissions, e-commerce, purchases, and total operating expenses.  These companies are not asked to supply sales tax or detailed expense information in survey years ending in "2" and "7."  The survey's target population consists of all US firms with paid employees that are primarily engaged in wholesale trade, as defined by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

Annual Wholesale Trade Survey

The Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey (MWTS) tracks month-to-month trends for sales and inventories of U.S. distributors, jobbers, drop shippers, and import/export merchants, excluding manufacturers' sales branches or offices (MSBOs).  Companies provide dollar values of sales and end-of-month inventories. Estimates are released 6 weeks after the close of the data month, containing preliminary current month estimates and final data for the previous month. Statistics include: sales, inventories, and inventory/sales ratios along with standard errors. Estimates are both seasonally adjusted and unadjusted.

Monthly Wholesale Trade Survey

The Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS) is a panel study of 4,928 businesses founded in 2004 and tracked over their early years of operation. The survey focuses on the nature of new business formation activity; characteristics of the strategy, offerings, and employment patterns of new businesses; the nature of the financial and organizational arrangements of these businesses; and the characteristics of their founders.

The use of these data is governed by agreement with the Kauffman Foundation.  The KFS data must be used in conjunction with Census Bureau data.  The Kauffman Foundation will review proposals and approve or deny use of the KFS data.  The Census Bureau will coordinate all additional necessary reviews.

The project review timeframes above do not apply to applications that request access to confidential data assets commingled with data that are either not owned, or are only co-owned, by the statistical agency(s) or unit(s) and require approval from third parties not subject to this policy (e.g., state and local government agencies).

Kauffman Firm Survey

The public use data which contains data from the baseline (2004) through seventh follow-up (2011) surveys. The dataset can be downloaded in SAS, SPSS, or STATA The KFS confidential microdata file includes more detailed industry codes, geographical codes (zip code, metropolitan statistical area, and state), and many additional continuous variables (in addition to categorical variables).

The Administrative Data Research Facility (ADRF) is a secure cloud-based computing platform designed to promote collaboration, facilitate documentation, and provide information about data use to the agencies that own the data. The ADRF has provided secure access to over 100 confidential government datasets from 50 different agencies at all levels of government. Remote access to restricted-use data at the authorized licensed location via the the Administrative Data Research Facility (ADRF) by a connected, networked computer.  

Researchers may access restricted-use National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data at Research Data Centers (RDCs) located in Hyattsville, MD, Atlanta, GA, Rockville, MD, and Washington DC (government employees only). The NCHS RDCs are open by appointment only during regular business hours. The NCHS RDC computers are not connected to the Internet, and they have standard statistical software. An RDC Analyst will review all materials brought into the RDC and will review any notes, code, or output the researcher may want to take out of the RDC. Electronic devices (e.g., cell phones and laptops) are not permitted in the RDC. Some NCHS projects are authorized to access NCHS data at Federal Statistical RDCs (FSRDC). Non-US Citizens: In general, non-US citizens are not granted access to NCHS RDCs and are encouraged to use Federal Statistical RDCs to access restricted-use NCHS data.

Access via physical data enclaves in Atlanta, GA; Hyattsville, MD; Rockville, MD; or Washington, DC (government employees only).

NCSES Secure Data Access Facility (SDAF) houses NCSES restricted-use data and provides secure remote access to researchers. After researchers have submitted a restricted-use data application, received approval from NCSES, and have been trained on how to use the SDAF, they can login using an approved computer and a private internet connection. Each researcher has access to their own, personal file space and to a suite of software that can be used to store, access, and analyze data. The NCSES Secure Data Access Facility is a virtual data enclave where approved researchers access NCSES restricted-use data.

USDA offers offsite remote access via a secure internet connection using the researcher’s own computer and web browser to approved datasets for data analysis within the Data Enclave. Each researcher has access to their own personal file space and to a suite of software that can be used to store, access, and analyze data.

Federal Statistical Research Data Centers (FSRDCs) are Census Bureau facilities, housed in partner institutions, that meet all physical and information security requirements for access to restricted–use micro data of the agencies whose data are accessed there. Remote access via secure Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) is permitted for researchers working with selected data, at the discretion of the data-owning agency. All FSRDC researchers must obtain the Census Bureau`s Special Sworn Status and successfully complete a thorough background investigation prior to accessing an RDC.
