The Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) is a National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored survey of tobacco use that is administered as part of the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was a co-sponsor with NCI from 2001-02 through 2006-07.

The Tobacco Use Supplement-Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) has served as a key source of national, state, and sub-state data on tobacco use behaviors, attitudes, and policies in the United States. The TUS is conducted every 3-4 years as part of the CPS, a monthly survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In each wave, TUS-CPS collects nationally representative data from about 240,000 adults, 180,000 from self-respondents. About two-thirds of respondents complete the questionnaire by telephone and responses for the remaining third are obtained through in-person interviews. The survey is regularly conducted in English and Spanish, and other languages when needed.

The Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (CPS-FSS) is the source of national and State-level statistics on food insecurity used in USDA's annual reports on household food security. The CPS is a monthly labor force survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Census Bureau for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Once each year, after answering the labor force questions, the same households are asked a series of questions (the Food Security Supplement) about food security, food expenditures, and use of food and nutrition assistance programs. Food security data have been collected by the CPS-FSS each year since 1995.

Voting and Registration data have been collected biennially in the November Current Population Survey (CPS) since 1964. The statistics presented are based on replies to survey inquiries about whether individuals were registered and/or voted in specific national elections. For the purpose of these estimates, election types are considered to be either Congressional (e.g. 2002, 2006, etc.) or Presidential (e.g. 2004, 2008, etc.). This national survey is conducted to produce a comprehensive set of statistics on voter and nonvoter characteristics as well as current voter trends, distinct from independent surveys, media polls, or other outside agencies. The universe for this survey is persons 18 years of age and older in each household that was eligible for the basic Current Population Survey (CPS). This survey is a proxy response survey and is sponsored by the United States Census Bureau.

Current Population Survey Voting and Registration Supplement

The Current Population Survey School Enrollment Supplement is a national survey conducted to obtain information about enrollment in formal schools, full-time and part-time status, and level of education. It is also used to obtain information about enrollment in business, vocational, technical, and correspondence courses. The universe for this survey are household members age 3 and older. It is a proxy response survey that is sponsored by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the United States Census Bureau.

Current Population Survey School Enrollment Supplement

The Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement was conducted as a supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS is a monthly labor force survey conducted in approximately 56,000 interviewed households across the country. The Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement questions were asked of persons age 16 years old or older. 

Questions were asked about participation in volunteer activities, types of organizations volunteered for, and the types of activities for volunteer service. Questions were also asked about whether or not donations of money, assets, or property valued at 25 dollars or more were made in the past year to charitable or religious organizations. Additional questions were asked about interactions with family, friends, neighbors, and people from other backgrounds; political engagement; group membership and participation.

Previous to 2017, this information came from two CPS supplements: the CPS Volunteer Supplement and the CPS Civic Engagement Supplement.  These two surveys were merged to become the CPS Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement.

Current Population Survey (CPS) Volunteer and Civic Life Supplement

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation sponsors the National survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households to collect data on the number of U.S. households that are unbanked and underbanked, their demographic characteristics, and their reasons for being unbanked and underbanked. This survey was conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau as a special supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS). The first survey was conducted in January 2009 and the second was conducted in June 2011. With the rich demographic and geographic data available through the CPS, this survey continues to present a wealth of previously unavailable data on unbanked and underbanked households at the national, state, and large metropolitan statistical area (MSA) levels.

Current Population Survey Unbanked/Underbanked Supplement

The Current Population Survey Fertility Supplement is a national survey conducted to obtain fertility data that will assist researchers in determining changes in the number of births at specified periods in the past that have altered the Nation's population composition. The universe for this survey is each household that was eligible for the Current Population Survey (CPS). The fertility questions are asked of females 15-44 years of age. It is a proxy response survey.

The Current Population Survey (CPS) Computer and Internet Use Supplement collects household information from all eligible CPS households, as well as person information from household members 3 years old and over. Data are provided about the household's computer and internet use and about each household member's use of the internet from any location in the past year. It also asked about a random respondent's use of the Internet. The universe consists of all persons in the civilian noninstitutional population of the United States living in households. The probability sample selected to represent the universe consists of approximately 56,000 households.

Current Population Survey Computer and Internet Use Supplement

The Civic Engagement Supplement of the Current Population Survey asks about respondents' involvement in their communities and communication with their family and friends. These questions are asked of respondents 18 years of age and older in all available samples except 2008, where questions were asked of respondents age 15 and older. The data offer such information as: level of participation in organized groups, extent of political action and knowledge, extent of connections with other community members, and how often individuals get news and information from various media sources.

From 2017 and onwards, the CPS Civic Engagement Supplement was merged with the CPS Volunteer Supplement to become the CPS Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement.

Current Population Survey (CPS) Civic Engagement Supplement

The CPS Volunteer Supplement was a national survey conducted to obtain information about the number of individuals in the U.S. involved in unpaid volunteer activities, and to measure the frequency with which individuals volunteer. The survey also identifies the types of organizations that facilitate volunteerism, and the types of activities in which volunteers participate. In 2016, the supplement changed to the Volunteer and Civic Life Supplement (RDG 855) to include additional questions. 

Data are provided on participation in volunteer activities during a one-year period from September 1 of the previous year to the date of the interview, the frequency of that activity, types of organizations volunteered for, and the types of activities for volunteer service.  Data are also provided on participation in volunteer activities in a foreign country and in volunteer activities more than 120 miles from home.  Data are also provided on whether or not donations of money, assets, or property valued at 25 dollars or more were made in the past year to charitable or religious organizations.

Current Population Survey Volunteer Supplement

The Annual Demographic Survey or March CPS supplement is the primary source of detailed information on income and work experience in the United States. Numerous publications based on this survey are issued each year by the Bureaus of Labor Statistics and Census. A public-use microdata file is available for private researchers, who also produce many academic and policy-related documents based on these data.

The Annual Demographic Survey is used to generate the annual Population Profile of the United States, reports on geographical mobility and educational attainment, and detailed analysis of money income and poverty status. The labor force and work experience data from this survey are used to profile the U.S. labor market and to make employment projections.

To allow for the same type of in-depth analysis of hispanics, additional hispanic sample units are added to the basic CPS sample in March each year. Additional weighting is also performed so that estimates can be made for households and families, in addition to persons.
Provide data concerning family characteristics, household composition, marital status, education attainment, health insurance coverage, foreign-born population, previous year’s income from all sources, work experience, receipt of noncash benefit, poverty, program participation, and geographic mobility.

The Administrative Data Research Facility (ADRF) is a secure cloud-based computing platform designed to promote collaboration, facilitate documentation, and provide information about data use to the agencies that own the data. The ADRF has provided secure access to over 100 confidential government datasets from 50 different agencies at all levels of government. Researchers may access restricted-use National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data at Research Data Centers (RDCs) located in Hyattsville, MD, Atlanta, GA, Rockville, MD, and Washington DC (government employees only). The NCHS RDCs are open by appointment only during regular business hours. The NCHS RDC computers are not connected to the Internet, and they have standard statistical software. An RDC Analyst will review all materials brought into the RDC and will review any notes, code, or output the researcher may want to take out of the RDC. Electronic devices (e.g., cell phones and laptops) are not permitted in the RDC. Some NCHS projects are authorized to access NCHS data at Federal Statistical RDCs (FSRDC). Non-US Citizens: In general, non-US citizens are not granted access to NCHS RDCs and are encouraged to use Federal Statistical RDCs to access restricted-use NCHS data.

NCSES Secure Data Access Facility (SDAF) houses NCSES restricted-use data and provides secure remote access to researchers. After researchers have submitted a restricted-use data application, received approval from NCSES, and have been trained on how to use the SDAF, they can login using an approved computer and a private internet connection. Each researcher has access to their own, personal file space and to a suite of software that can be used to store, access, and analyze data. The NCSES Secure Data Access Facility is a virtual data enclave where approved researchers access NCSES restricted-use data.

USDA offers offsite remote access via a secure internet connection using the researcher’s own computer and web browser to approved datasets for data analysis within the Data Enclave. Each researcher has access to their own personal file space and to a suite of software that can be used to store, access, and analyze data.

Data can be used by the researcher(s) at their institutions via a method and following requirements set by the agency owning the data. These might include a non-networked computer, a secure office, or other provisions deemed necessary to ensure security.

Researchers share four secure workstations at BEA’s headquarters at the Suitland Federal Center in Suitland, MD. Workstation use is by appointment only. Due to pandemic-related restrictions that currently prevent access at the physical data enclave, BEA is temporarily providing access at the user`s domicile. A security clearance is required to access the BEA network.

BLS Onsite access is available in a researcher room at the BLS national office in Washington, DC.  Researchers with approved projects can reserve time during normal business hours to use BLS workstations connected to an internal server where all data and project files are stored. Federal Statistical Research Data Centers (FSRDCs) are Census Bureau facilities, housed in partner institutions, that meet all physical and information security requirements for access to restricted–use micro data of the agencies whose data are accessed there. Remote access via secure Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) is permitted for researchers working with selected data, at the discretion of the data-owning agency. All FSRDC researchers must obtain the Census Bureau`s Special Sworn Status and successfully complete a thorough background investigation prior to accessing an RDC.
