Administrative data from SSA Master Beneficiary Records are matched to Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) respondents, including all SSA program data collected prior to and following the SIPP data collection.   The SIPP data for this matching included data from the Event History Calendar.  The Event History Calendar was developed for the SIPP survey to develop month level data for each respondent during the reference period.  Each wave of the SIPP survey covers 12 individual months in the reference year.

SSA Master Beneficiary Record (MBR) SIPP Event History Calendar

The SSA's Master Beneficiary Record (MBR) is the main file used for administering Old Age and Survivor's Insurance (OASI) and SSDI payments.  The MBR is a system of electronic records that contain certain information about all Social Security beneficiaries who are, or were, entitled to receive Retirement and Survivors Insurance.  The file Census Bureau receives is the universe of addresses for the benefit transactions and does not contain benefit transaction information.  The researchers should use this file  for transactions as the transaction data is incomplete.

SSA Master Beneficiary Record (MBR)

OASDI Public-Use Microdata File consists of a 1 percent random, representative sample of records of OASDI beneficiaries who were entitled to receive a Social Security (OASDI) benefit

The Gold Standard file was developed to link and standardize all survey and administrative data.

The SIPP data for this matching included data from the Event History Calendar.  The Event History Calendar was developed for the SIPP survey to develop month level data for each respondent during the reference period.  Each wave of the SIPP survey covers 12 individual months in the reference year.

SSA Payment History Update System (PHUS) SIPP Event History Calendar

The Payment History Update System (PHUS) contains benefit payment information for the 
purpose of taxing Social Security benefits, which became subject to taxation in 1984. Although 
the data are physically housed at the end of an MBR record, the PHUS is a logically distinct
database. While the MBR file reflects payment information beginning with the date of 
entitlement, the PHUS reflects the actual disbursement date and amount. PHUS extracts can be 
requested via the MBR extract process, and each extract includes the MBR in addition to the 
PHUS data.SSA data from the Payment History Update System. 

This file is the universe of addresses for transactions.  This is not a transaction file and should not be used for transactions.  The transaction data is not complete on this file.

SSA Payment History Update System (PHUS)

The Supplemental Security Record consists of a system of electronic records that contain certain information about every individual who has applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments under Title XVI of the Social Security Act, including individuals who have requested an advance payment, SSI recipients who have been overpaid, and eligible persons associated with an SSI recipient.  The SSR also covers individuals who have applied for and who are entitle to the Special Veterans Benefits (SVD) under Title VIII o fthe Act.  It does not cover applicants who do not have a Social Security Number.  The file received by Census Bureau contains a universe of addresses for the benefit transactions.  This file does not contain all transaction information and should not be used for transactions.  The transaction data on this file is not complete.
